Virginia Highlands ResidenceResidential Design
Originally conceived by Janine MacKenzie during her time at Smith Hanes Studio, this new construction residence in Virginia Highlands continued to be refined and evolve with Janine continuing to design under Chuck Marie Studio. The project, executed by Horner Homes, centers around a spacious, family-oriented residence that balances modern aesthetics with warmth and comfort.
The design focuses on creating interconnected living spaces that cater to the family’s lifestyle, including a versatile kitchen that seamlessly blends with a casual dining area and a living room perfect for gatherings. Large windows ensure the home is bathed in natural light, connecting the indoors with the lush backyard where the family can enjoy outdoor activities.
The house features custom finishes and fixtures that reflect the owners’ refined taste, while maintaining a welcoming and practical environment for their growing family. The exterior combines traditional and contemporary elements, ensuring it complements the historic charm of the Virginia Highlands neighborhood while standing out with its unique character.
Main Living SpacesThe kitchen anchors the main floor with a generous stone and wood island surrounded by slate gray barstools, custom taupe cabinetry, and a fully stone-clad range with integrated lighting. The breakfast room softens the moment with a custom white oak table and camel and rose banquette tucked beneath the window. The warmth continues in the living room, with its low, sprawling sofa in amber-gold velvet, custom copper and wood coffee tables, a bold black and white graphic rug, and a custom limestone fireplace. The powder room is sumptuous with deep black glossy plaster, and a Calcutta Viola stone counter over a custom brass-legged vanity.
Primary Suite The primary bedroom embodies quiet luxury with its white oak dresser and night stands, alabaster and black steel light fixture, and patterned sheers drapery softening the light. The bathroom centers on a soaking tub beneath generous windows, flanked by high gloss celeste blue vanities, white marble countertops and herringbone floor, and brass at every touch point: mirror, sconces, faucets, cabinet hardware, warm without insistence.
Secondary SpacesThe secondary spaces include the moody blue plaster office with its custom walnut and brass light fixture, soapstone fireplace, and sheer curtains that filter light without surrendering the drama. The playroom, vibrant with color and life, with its rich earth-toned rug underfoot, rope lighting, vibrant artwork, and enough personality to fuel a child's imagination. The kids' bedroom is drenched with color from the dusty pink walls, to the custom velvet Roman shade, and a plummy bench under the window.
